Creating the perfect dining area

Many people now don’t use their dining room as the chosen place to have meals in the house. With everyone’s busy lifestyles, fewer families have time to sit down and eat together as often as we used to. However, it’s still important to create a dining area that is inviting, whether that’s in a separate dining room or in an open plan kitchen diner, or even in a conservatory.

Dining rooms are a great room to decorate, as they often are isolated from the rest of the house so you can take the design in a different direction to every other room, should you so choose. For instance you might have a very modern layout in the kitchen and living room, but that doesn’t stop you from taking a more old-fashioned approach to the dining room. Traditional dining tables and chairs are often made of highly polished wood that might feel too ornate for the whole house, but work well in just one room.

Alternatively you can take the room along a more modern route, with a table made out of glass or metal, and chairs to match. Some people like to buy any other furniture in the room from the same furniture range to give it a sense of harmony.

If you don’t want a separate dining room, then you have the potential to free up a room for another use. Many people turn their dining rooms into home offices or a second living room. This is a great idea if you’ve got a growing family and are short on space, especially if you don’t often use the dining room as such.

Of course, if you move your dining area to another room, you’ll need to make sure that the dining set that you choose goes well with the other furniture in the room. Remember though, that function usually has to take precedence over looks. Before buying any dining furniture, make sure that the table is the right height, it has a surface that isn’t too delicate and that you choose comfortable dining chairs.

Modern Fireplace The winter can often take an emotional toll on many individuals. The cold temperatures and early darkness often set the mood for lethargy and sleep. Even so, work does not cease during these drab winter months. A way to keep away the winter urges toward inactivity and sleep is through good light, good light with regard to natural and artificial light. During the winter months there are less and less hours of natural sunlight so it is important to make the most of them. The installation of skylights and skydomes has become increasingly common in the last two years. As a result of this, the installation cost has decreased substantially. The benefits afforded from the natural light of a skylight or skydome is not limited to the winter. One is able to enjoy increased natural light through out the four seasons. Skylights and domes also increase the resale value of a home up to 10% percent per skylight.

Home Improvement – A Home Office

As someone who commuted to an Office job fifty miles away for nearly forty years I find the idea of an Office within the home totally and utterly brilliant. Sadly it would have been impossible in my day but with today’s advancement in technology and the ability to do things we could never have dreamed of just a few years ago it is an ideal for anyone wanting to get out of the so called rat race and working from home. Before you do decide to work from home bear in mind the various distractions that can so easily occur.  Is the refrigerator far enough away to stop an incessant march to and fro for a diet drink or to just grab a bite to eat? Does the thought of watching the first mornings play at Lords seem more attractive than that urgent budget forecast you were doing for a client?

Office space

Space is the obvious cry when you start to sow the seeds of interest in your mind. The room must have a window and you have to decide if clients will be calling and if so then facilities have to be near to hand. Noise is another thing to take into consideration. If the house is going to be full of children, especially pre-school ones, plus a partner or spouse then draw a deep breath and think strongly before going ahead. Youngsters knowing that Mummy or Daddy or both are at home all day can lead to problems.

If clients are not on the agenda then life will be much easier and the spare room, sorry, new office, can start to take shape as soon as you have made a few decisions regarding the allocation of space. But before that there are several ergonomically factors to be considered such as heat, light and noise. Basically your office has to be in a fairly quiet environment. Too much noise will simply be a distraction. As we already mentioned there has to be a window in the room and the light should be enough so the screens are easily readable without glare but are not so dark that eyestrain will be a factor. An adjustable desk lamp is a necessity. As far as warmth is concerned it seems obvious but the room should not be too hot or too cold. Some of the machines will emit warmth simply by being turned on.

Your office has to have the basic desk, a very comfy chair, computer, fax machine, printer, separate phone to the main house one and possibly a shredder. Consideration should also be given to a filing cabinet (dont believe all you hear about paperless offices) plus a few shelves. Obviously all this depends on the space available but must be thought about before anything is ordered. Cabling and wiring also has to be given consideration. Oh yes and a waste paper basket for good measure.
